Comment by Derwin Sherwood on May 15, 2012 at 15:24 New information has emerged in the case of a former college student who was denied a presidential pardon after being sentenced to three life terms for a first-time, nonviolent drug offense. An investigation by ProPublica shows the pardon attorney in the case of Clarence Aaron omitted critical information when recommending that President George W. Bush deny Aaron’s pardon request. The report found Ronald Rodgers, who remains in the post of pardon attorney under President Obama, did not disclose the fact that the prosecutor and judge in the case had advocated for Aaron to receive an immediate commutation — his only chance to avoid life behind bars. Clarence Aaron, who is African American, was in his early twenties when he was sentenced to three life terms for a nonviolent drug offense — despite the fact that he had no criminal record and did not buy, sell or supply the drugs involved. A recent investigation by ProPublica and the Washington Post found that white applicants were nearly four times as likely to receive presidential pardons as people of color between 2001 and 2008.
Comment by Derwin Sherwood on May 11, 2012 at 14:40 New details have been revealed on a military course recently cancelled by the Pentagon for teaching senior military officers the United States is at war with Islam. According to course materials obtained by Wired magazine, the class instructor — Army Lt. Col. Matthew Dooley of the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia — taught that the United States will need to fight a "total war" against the world’s Muslims to protect the nation. Dooley also instructed that the United States should "[take] war to a civilian population wherever necessary" and apply the "the historical precedents of Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki" to Islam’s holiest cities, bringing about "Mecca and Medina[’s] destruction." Dooley also told his pupils : "By conservative estimates, a staggering 140 million [Muslims] ... hate everything you stand for and will never coexist with you, unless you submit [to Islam]." In addition, Dooley’s course declared international laws protecting civilians are "no longer relevant" in the fight against Islam. A presentation from July 2011 declared: "This barbaric ideology will no longer be tolerated. Islam must change or we will facilitate its self-destruction." Finally, Dooley instructed his students: "Remember — we are at war. Act like it. You are part of a resistance movement, not a social club." Dooley’s course was suspended last month, but he remains on staff at the college.
Comment by Derwin Sherwood on February 10, 2012 at 14:33 In Syria, at least 25 people have been killed in two bomb attacks on military and security buildings in the northern city of Aleppo. The bombings come as the Syrian government continues to bombard the city of Homs with tanks, helicopters and artillery, reportedly killing more than 100 people on Thursday. Witnesses said roads around the suburb of Baba Amr have been sealed, and residents there are running out of food. In video posted online, an activist living inside Homs appealed for international help.
Danny Abdul Dayem: "This is Homs, Baba Amr. We can see over there another rocket landed on one of the civilians’ houses. This has been going on all day long, from 5 a.m. It’s about 8 a.m. right now. This is going to keep going on until 7 p.m. This is the life we’ve got used to: rockets, bullets killing children dead in the street, body parts. Why isn’t the world helping us? Where’s the humanity in the world? Where is the freaking U.N.? Why isn’t anyone doing anything about this? Are these animals? Aren’t these civilian houses over there? Aren’t these human beings that live in that house."
Comment by Derwin Sherwood on February 7, 2012 at 15:08 Former CIA Director Michael Hayden has openly criticized the Obama’s administration use of pilot-less drones to assassinate suspected militants around the world. Hayden said, "Right now, there isn’t a government on the planet that agrees with our legal rationale for these operations, except for Afghanistan and maybe Israel." The drone program began under President George W. Bush but has rapidly expanded under Obama. So far, the Obama administration has carried out drone strikes in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Ethiopia and Libya. Hayden also criticized the U.S. assassination of the U.S. born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen. Hayden said, "We needed a court order to eavesdrop on him, but we didn’t need a court order to kill him. Isn’t that something?"
